Sorry you're dealing with this terrible process too! If it's like how I experienced it, they'll send your application back, tell you where to put the explanation, and tell you what to write. Looking back at what I was sent, I had to write the explanation on the form itself (very annoying that they don't have a designated space for it!) and initial that amendment.
